Short Notes from 2/10/2007

Memorial Fund: Contributions to the Memorial Fund are being accepted. These funds are used to send young flyers to space camp. Last year we sent two future pilots to Huntsville for about $700 each. Please see Dr. John Isbell to make contributions.

2007 Calendar: Darrell Smith has put together a great calendar featuring the planes and chapter members of EAA 890. The 2007 calendars are available at the Fort Payne FBO for $10 each.

Grill Repair: Barry Wigley has been working on the large grill in the EAA hangar. It needs a new thermocouple at a cost of about $180. Everyone agreed that it was worth it to have the grill working again.

User Fees: General Aviation pilots should all be concerned with FAA proposals for user fees. Phil Boyer of AOPA predicts that user fees could be the end of general aviation as we know it. Boyer went on to say of the Bush 2008 budget proposal that "the administration is manufacturing an FAA 'funding crisis' in a smoke-and-mirrors attempt to divert attention away from the real issue — the need to address the problems that constrain capacity, efficiency, and new technology adoption." Visit the AOPA website for more information on this issue at www.aopa.org

Along these lines, on a recent visit to Fort Payne, one of Senator Shelby's aides told Bob Brown that letters currently take 2 to 3 months to reach the Senator. He suggested that email is a better option. To contact Senator Shelby, write to senator@shelby.senate.gov. To contact Senator Sessions, go to http://sessions.senate.gov/email/contact.cfm

Project Documentation: Ron Iaconis wanted to remind members to document their projects with photos and video as well as in writing. He pointed out that photos were very helpful long after the initial construction project was completed.

Rome Fly-in: The Rome EAA will be having a fly-in workshop on the second Saturday in May. Note: this is the same day as Buster's spring fly-in.

Aircraft Supplies: If you haven't yet discovered Mid-South Aircraft, you may want to check it out. It is a good idea to call ahead and check the hours. 205-836-8357 Mid-South Aircraft, 2525 Alton Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35210, . Take I-59 south to the I-459 by-pass. Take Exit 32 (Derby Pkwy, or Dog Race Track). At the bottom of ramp make a right, go 1/4 mile take the first right. At stop sign make a left, go to traffic lite and bear right into the parking lot. Pass the first building and go to the back building through the fenced gate. All the stuff is in the big storage warehouse. Ask Jim Crosthwait to just look around. If you are looking for something special and don't find it, be sure to ask.

Fly-in Breakfast - March 31, 2007
The last breakfast was held in December on a gray and windy day. Low ceilings and bumpy conditions kept many planes on the ground, but the 50 or so people that made it to the EAA hangar enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and plenty of story telling. As a holiday treat, Laura and John Bundy added fresh fruit, coffee cake and hot apple cider to the December breakfast menu. Special thanks to Barry & Madonna Wigley, Joyce Myers, Bob Brown, Mike Atwell, John Isbell and Steve Bell for help with breakfast. Thanks also to John Shippey, and Jackie Bailey for hangar cleanup and preparation. A double thanks to John Shippey for repairing the frozen water line in the hangar.

Chapter 890 will be hosting the next fly-in breafast on Saturday, March 31, 2007. Breakfast for members begins at 7:00 and is open to all others from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM CST. Please contact Laura or John Bundy if you would be willing to help in the kitchen, hangar cleanup, or with airplane parking.

Spring Fly-in - May 12, 2007
Buster McCurdy will be having a fly-in at his airstrip on the May 12th. The monthly meeting of EAA 890 will be held at Buster's. Check back for details.
