February 2008 Issue
The regular meeting of EAA Chapter 890 was held on February 9th and was
attended by a full house. The meeting was conducted by President Barry
Wigley.
Bob Brown sent a report that he is still working with the City of Fort
Payne to get a defibrillator available at the airport. It was suggested
that once the unit is in place another class be held to train people to
use it.
Barry Wigley has nearly completed 16 sets of wheel chocks for use during
fly-in breakfasts and other events. We could still use some more if anyone
is willing to make some.
Young Eagles
John Shippey reported that Mary McGuire has agreed to become the coordinator
for the Young Eagles. John has been instrumental in making the Young Eagles
program so successful here in Fort Payne. A very special thank you to
John for all his past work and to Mary's willingness to step in.
May Meeting & Fly-in
Buster McCurdy has invited everyone to his second annual fly-in on May
10th. Since this is a second Saturday, we will meet at Buster's for our
regular monthly meeting. Lunch will follow. Please bring a covered dish
to share. Buster has offered to provide barbeque. Other planned activites
include the flour drop and balloon bust. Camping is available. Watch for
further details.

AOPA Safety Seminar
The newest AOPA Air Safety Foundation seminar, Top 5 Mistakes
Pilots Make, will be in Huntsville on Thursday, February
28 from 7 to 9 PM. This free seminar will be held at Lockheed
Martin Corporation Auditorium, 4800 Bradford Drive, Huntsville, AL. The
same seminar will also be presented in Birmingham on March 10
from 7 to 9 PM at the Alabama Air National Guard, 5401 East Lake
Blvd., 117th Air Refueling Wing, Building #151, Birmingham, AL 35217.
See www.asf.org/seminars
for more information.
These free seminars qualify for AOPA's Accident Forgiveness and Deductible
Waiver Program and for the FAA Wings Program. Those that attended the
last seminar all reported that it was worth the drive to attend. Mike
Atwell suggested that we may want to carpool.
The Air Safety Foundation website has also recently added a number podcasts
and interactive safety reviews. This is a great resource for keeping yourself
current on all things pilot oriented, see www.asf.org. |

TFRs and an election year
As many of you know, there was a TFR on Thursday while President Bush
was touring the tornado damage just north of us. Guy York reminded us
that TFRs can become rather common and unpredictable during election years.
Be certain you make checking the TFRs a regular part of your preflight
briefing.
Guy will be presenting a safety review of operations at a towered airport
at the March meeting. You can see notes from Guy's last presentation by
clicking Safety Review link on the left. |

Still More on the Never-ending User Fees Debate
Just when we thought we might have been able to put the user fee debate
behind us, the Bush Administration has brought it back in its original
ill-concieved form in their 2009 Budget Proposal.
While nothing has really changed in the past month with the current bills
working their way through congress, this latest FAA proposal is worrisome
in its persistence. “What part of ‘NO!’ doesn’t
the White House understand?” asked AOPA President Phil Boyer after
reviewing the administration’s proposed FAA budget for fiscal year
2009. “They just changed the dates and submitted essentially the
same proposal as last year—a proposal soundly rejected by the general
aviation community, the House, and the Senate." (see
more from AOPA)
The government's authority to collect aviation taxes -- and spend from
the aviation trust fund -- has been extended again. It will now expire
at the end of June 2008. The House of Representatives passed H.R. 2881
- the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2007 - back on September 20th, but the
Senate has yet to pass an FAA authorization bill. (see
2/15/2008 updates)
Congress must address this issue by June 30th in order
to maintain operation of the FAA. Please take the time to contact your
Congressional delegation about this issue. Tell them you support HR2881
as it was passed (i.e., no user fees). To see an issue overview, visit
http://www.aopa.org/faafundingdebate
It is important that we make our voices heard on this issue. Here is
