Chapter 890 Meeting - April 12, 2008

The April meeting of EAA Chapter 890 was called to order by Vice-President Guy York. There were around 2 dozen members present and one visitor from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Fly-in Breakfast - March 29
The last Fort Payne fly-in breakfast was held on a foggy Saturday morning on March 29. Not a single plane was able to fly-in, but the 30 or so folks that drove in enjoyed breakfast and good company.

Young Eagles - April 12
The Young Eagles were flying on April 12th on the front edge of a cold front. Some of the young flyers got a bouncy ride, but it didn't diminish the enthusiasm that this event generates. Thanks to Mary McGuire, Wilma Playford, John Shippey, Steve Bell, Dr. John Isbell, Jackie Bailey, Doug Carter, and others for working with and helping introduce a new generation to aviation. We flew 30 Young Eagles and turned away about 10 due to windy conditions and only a two planes available.

McCurdy May Fly-in - May 17
Buster McCurdy has invited everyone to his second annual fly-in on May 17th. Note the date has changed - it is now the third Saturday of May. Lunch will be served. Please bring a covered dish to share. Buster has offered to provide barbecue. Other planned activities include the flour drop and balloon bust. Camping is available. Watch for further details. Please let Buster & Diane know if you will attend so they can plan the food and what your passing dish might be. The email is dianeproperties@farmerstel.com

  Mud and Fun '08
There were only a couple members that reported they had been to Sun N Fun this year.   This year's event was one of the wettest in memory; on Sunday 5-1/2 inches fell in about 4 hours. So many people were unable to attend that local hotels actually had plenty of rooms available. Photos from Lakeland showed airplanes parked on the field standing in water up to the wheel pants. Harley noted that some of the items of note included: RV12 was introduced, Updated Cessna 162, Cessna 350 was Columbia 350, Cessna 400 was Columbia 400, Diamond D-Jet, Diamond DA50 SuperStar,
Ellipse Jet, Cirrus Jet, Lansair Evolution, and Avionics Improvements everywhere.

EAA's Newsletters
The national EAA has recently redesigned their electronic newsletter. See www.eaa.org/newsletters to sign up. A useful article in the Chapter E-gram has instructions and photos on building a toggle switch lock. This is particularly useful when home-builts are on display and switches are accessible to the public.

Flight Training
Guy York has been working on acquiring a simulator that can be used for flight training at the Fort Payne airport. Check with Guy for details.

Senate to Vote on Bill Without User Fees
There is agreement in the Senate on FAA funding. User fees are off the table.

Late in the afternoon on April 25, the leaders of the Senate Finance and Commerce committees announced they had resolved their different approaches to FAA funding and were ready to present a final bill to the full Senate on Monday afternoon.

“We’re on final approach to an FAA funding bill in the Senate,” said AOPA President Phil Boyer, “and we finally got clearance because of the support and determination of AOPA members who were willing to accept a tax increase, if truly necessary, to support a modernized air traffic control system, but stood rock solid against user fees.”

If the bill is approved by the full Senate, it is expected to keep avgas taxes at the current rate of 19.3 cents per gallon, but increase jet fuel taxes to 36 from 21.8 cents per gallon. There would be no change in the taxes on airlines. And no user fees.
