June 2008
The regular meeting of EAA 890 was held on June 14 with about 14 members
attending. Dr. Isbell reported that the last fly-in breakfast was well
attended and that we did well financially. The April Young Eagles was
also well attended. This popular program can bring out a lot of families
and generates a lot of support for general aviation in the community.
If you would be willing to participate as a pilot or aircraft owner in
this worthy program, please contact John Shippey or Mary McQuire.
Below are a few articles gleaned from various aviaiton newsletters.
CAN GA GET THE LEAD OUT?
AOPA is telling the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that any immediate
changes to current aviation fuel standards to remove lead would have a
"direct impact on the safety of flight and the very future of light
aircraft in this country." Testifying on June 12 in Baltimore before
an EPA hearing on air quality standards for lead, AOPA Executive Vice
President of Government Affairs Andy Cebula said, "The aviation industry
shares the concern about lead in the environment. The general aviation
community is actively researching alternative fuels, and we're developing
certification standards for new fuels and engines. But despite a decade
of research and trials, there is currently no unleaded alternative for
100LL avgas that can be used safely by all piston-powered aircraft flying
today." Read more on AOPA Online ( http://www.aopa.org/epilot/redir.cfm?adid=15793
).
CHASING EFFICIENCY
With high avgas prices, fuel efficiency is quickly becoming a hot topic
among pilots. What's the best fuel burn you've achieved in your aircraft?
And if you're in the market for a new aircraft, is its fuel efficiency
one of your
considerations? Share your thoughts in "AOPA Pilot" Associate
Editor Ian
Twombly's latest blog, "Chasing efficiency"

EAA's Newsletters
The national EAA has recently redesigned their electronic newsletter.
See www.eaa.org/newsletters
to sign up. A useful article in the Chapter E-gram has instructions and
photos on building a toggle
switch lock. This is particularly useful when home-builts are on display
and switches are accessible to the public. |

General Aviation News
GAO REPORT LOOKS AT EXPANDING USER FEES
User fees are like a weed you can never kill. That became readily apparent
when the Government Accountability Office (GAO) last month issued Federal
User Fees - A Design Guide, a 49-page instruction manual to Congress
and federal agencies on how to figure out when and how to charge for government
services.
www.gao.gov/new.items/d08386sp.pdf
"The clear message here is that no matter how many times we beat
back user fees for those aviation services that benefit the entire public,
the ground remains fertile for fee attempts to spring up again,"
said Andy Cebula, AOPA executive vice president of government affairs.
"But our 415,000 members help us stay ahead." Read more on AOPA
Online ( http://www.aopa.org/epilot/redir.cfm?adid=15725
