July 2008

The regular meeting of EAA 890 was held on July 12 and called to order by Vice President Guy York, with 12 members were present.

Old Business:
The airshow in Huntsville was discussed.

September 13th is the date set for the fly-in to raise money for the D.A.R.E. program. The event is called Dare Wings and Wheels. There will be a car show and a motorcycle show as well as aircraft static displays and demonstrations. There will be three trophies awarded to registered aircraft participants. The categories will be; Best Antique (1965 or older), Best Experimental, and Sheriff’s Choice. Registration for those wishing to be judged is $20 with proceeds going to D.A.R.E. Discussions about what the chapters plans for the event were tabled until the next meeting when we could have more members present. Many members were involved flying Young Eagles. We only have one meeting prior to the event so all members are encouraged to attend. We need your help.

New Business:
Not many members expressed plans to go to Oshkosh citing fuel prices as a contributing factor.

Tony Bartley with the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Department attended the meeting and gave a presentation about the D.A.R.E. program. It was very informative and he answered questions and thanked us for our support for the Wings and Wheels event. All proceeds go to D.A.R.E.

The web site for the event is www.darewingsandwheels.com. EAA 890 is listed as a sponsor with a link to our web page.

Darrell Smith gave a report of the first flight of his Zodiac. He was very pleased with the performance. As of the meeting he had about 9 hours on the aircraft.

Miscellaneous News for E-pilots

Breeze Through Your Next Medical
Many pilots renew their medical certification during the spring and summer months. To ensure you don't get hit with unnecessary delays in the event of a deferred medical application, follow the medical certification tips on AOPA Online (http://www.aopa.org/members/pic/medical/certification/index.html ) or visit http://www.leftseat.com/pass.htm.
Before you visit your aviation medical examiner, fill out AOPA's TurboMedical ( http://www.aopa.org/members/pic/medical/turbomedical/ ) interactive medical form. It will flag disqualifying answers and give you the information you need to get the problem corrected before your medical. Plus, you can print the form and give it to your AME to attach to your application so that you don't have to fill it out again. If you have any questions about medical certification, call our specialists at 800/USA-AOPA.

General Aviation Not The Source of Costly Airline Delays, Study Finds
Airline delays cost the nation's economy as much as $41 billion a year. So what's the cause? It's not general aviation, according to a recent report from the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) of Congress (www.jec.senate.gov ). The statistical analysis of airline flight delays showed that 29 percent were caused by things the airlines could control, such as baggage handling and fueling. Some 40 percent of all delayed fights were because the preceding flight arrived late. "Extreme" weather accounted for less than six percent of delays, according to the JEC. Read more on AOPA Online

General Aviation News

Some day we hope that this section will go away, never to be revised. But this is not the day.

Thanks to Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington), the appropriations aviation subcommittee once again inserted language in the Department of Transportation appropriations bill decreeing that "none of the funds in this Act shall be available for the Federal Aviation Administration to finalize or implement any regulation that would promulgate new aviation user fees not specifically authorized by law after the date of the enactment of this Act."

Consequently, the FAA won't be able to spend any money to implement new user fees if the Department of Transportation appropriations bill, now pending in the Senate, passes.

Unfortunately, the bill does not completely remove the threat of fees. The FAA is currenlty operating under temporary extensions to the last authorizing bill that expired September 30 last year. A current extension will expire at the end of this September.
