First D.A.R.E Wings & Wheels a Success
The first D.A.R.E. Wings and Wheels event was be held September 13th from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Fort Payne Airport. The event included an aircraft show and demonstration, car show, motorcycle show, food, trophies and games. Attendance was good and organizers were pleased with the event. All proceeds went to the Dekalb County D.A.R.E. program.

Email from Guy York: Just a quick note to say thanks to all our members who helped with the Wings and Wheels Show at the airport. I know it was a hot, long day and you don’t know how much the DARE officers and I appreciate it. We couldn’t have done it without you. Great Job!

Congratulations to our members:
John Myers - 1st place Experimental
Rodney Graham - 2nd place Experimental
Barry Wigley - 3rd place Experimental

Barry Wigley - Sheriff’s Choice

Be sure the first weekend in October is reserved for John & Joyce Myers' annual fly-in at their Flying M Ranch in Cedar Bluff on October 4th, 2008. Check the website for directions and further details: www.flyingmranch.us or print a flyer (pdf format)

Other News:

ATC Communications
With runway incursions and near-misses in the headlines recently, it appears that some FAA facilities have implemented a "no tolerance" policy on pilot deviations regardless of the circumstances. If you are in the least uncertain about instructions from ATC, use the phrase "say again" then repeat the instructions in their entirety. Thanks to Harley McGatha for sharing an ALPA Air Safety Alert on this topic. See their recommendations (pdf format) for communications with ATC.

Nav Monster
If you are looking for an easy to use, comprehensive flight planner, you'll want to check out NavMonster.com. Simply type in your departure and destination airports, and this free web-based program, will provide a plethora of information. No need even to sign-in. A google map appears showing the route of flight and all airports along the way. Hover over any of the airports along the way and you'll get a quick summary of runway length and elevation, distance from the departure airport, and current weather.

Select the Weather tab at the top of the screen and you'll find METARS and TAFs for each end of your route, and sites along your route. You'll also find winds aloft in an easy to read table that actually gives you the degree of headwind or tailwind along your route -- no calculations needed.

Other tabs take you to Charts, Fuel, nearby Food & Lodging, FBO information, and Airport Data with airport diagrams, frequencies, and chart and aerial photos of the airport. You can even file a flight plan using your DUATS account.

Unfortunately, the Fuel tab only allows you to look at one airport at a time using 100LL.com where as AirNav will create a chart to make fuel prices easier to compare. The Airport Data does not offer a print option for a knee board format that is available with AOPA's flight planner, but these are minor complaints. NavMonster is truly an easily accessed, comprehensive flight planner worth checking out.

FAA Intends to Reduce VOR Network Soon
The FAA has confirmed to AOPA that it is making plans to reduce the network of VORs across the country, beginning in 2010. However, AOPA members are not quite convinced that a widespread VOR reduction is acceptable. Survey information shows that only about half of AOPA members believe a significant number of VORs can be eliminated without affecting their flight operations.

"Clearly this marks a big step forward in pilot acceptance of GPS and reduced reliance on VORs, but members are still saying 'not yet,'" said Andy Cebula, AOPA executive vice president of government affairs.

A Fuel-Saving Message from Your ASI
The airspeed indicator (ASI) can tell you a great deal about how to fly more efficiently, but few pilots know how to decode its drag-reducing, fuel-saving, and range-extending message. According to Jack Norris, an aerospace engineer and technical director for the 1986 "Voyager" around-the-world flight, a simple, mechanical ASI (and an understanding of the aerodynamic drag chart and an airplane's best rate of climb speed) is all we need to maximize speed vs. drag. Minimizing drag is the key to reducing fuel burn and extending range. Read more on AOPA Online

Flight Training
Guy York has set up a simulator that can be used for flight training at the Fort Payne airport. With av gas prices so high, this is an inexpensive way to get in some practice. Check with Guy for details.

Mastering Takeoffs & Landings - Safety Seminar
Another seminar presented by the AOPA Air Safety Foundation and the FAA Aviation Safety Team will be presented on Thursday, October 2, 2008 from 7-9 PM at the Lockheed Martin Corporation Auditorium, 4800 Bradford Drive in Huntsville, Alabama. These seminars are always entertaining and educational, and this seminar qualifies for the AOPA Accident Forgiveness and Deductible Waiver Program. Funding Overview and contact information

Funding Debate Bullet Items

Congress Punts FAA Funding Issue into 2009
Call it the Washington, D.C., version of kick the can. With the latest
extension of the FAA funding bill set to expire at the end of September,
Congress wrangling over a $700 billion bail-out bill for U.S. financial
institutions, and legislators wanting to get out of town to campaign,
Congress decided the FAA funding issue could wait until next year. "That
means we can declare victory in the battle against user fees, at least in
2008," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. On Sept. 23, the House and Senate
passed a bill that extends the current aviation taxes on fuel and airline
tickets until March 31, 2009. It also gives the FAA the authority to spend
nearly $7.9 billion over the next six months. Read more on AOPA Online
