Wings & Wheels a Success
By all accounts, Fort Payne's first Wings and Wheels was a success. Guy York expressed thanks to all that contributed their time and efforts. Turnout was good even though there were a lot of competing events that weekend and gasoline was in limited supply thanks to Hurricane Ike. Feedback has been positive. There were some very good comments from visiting pilots about the safety of aviation operations. The RVs impressed the non-aviation crowd who were amazed at the skill of our local the experimental builders. There seems to be a perception that homebuilts are akin to tinker toys, but Rodney, John Myers and Barry's planes went a long way to squash that myth. That crazy motorcycle rider, aka Guy York, admitted a top speed of 173 mph; not surprisingly he beat anything in the air that day.

With any first time event, there were some lessons learned. We need help with finding sponsors. Pushing the event back to October in hopes of some cooler weather has been discussed.

Other Agenda Items

There was a short discussion about sending kids to space camp. It was put on hold until next spring.

Possible locations for the Christmas party were discussed. We will try to have the party on December 13 in replacement of our monthly meeting.

It is time for elections. Please come next month with suggestions for officers.

Flying M Ranch Annual Fly-in
John and Joyce Myers held their annual fly-in at their Flying M Ranch in Cedar Bluff on October 4th, 2008. It was an absolutely perfect day with pleasant temperatures, light winds and lots of airplanes. About 50 planes came in and out that day and around 150 people lined up for Wayne Goza's famous catfish lunch.

Other News:

Tuskegee Airmen
The Tuskegee Airmen were honored at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site last Friday (October 10) with the dedication of the restored hangar and opening of exhibits detailing those days during WWII when the nation was in the midst of war and young men and women stepped forward to serve as pilots, mechanics and support for our troops.

Moton Field (06A) has undergone several changes in the last few years. A new FBO, Golden Eagle Aviation, (Ph: 334-727-6485) is located next to the old hangar on the ramp with modern, clean facilities. Construction continues on the restoration of the hangars that are expected to be completed in the spring of 2009. (Drainage problems and artesian springs near the airfield, have delayed completition.) A temporary visitor center sits atop the hill overlooking the field where a short movie, exhibits and sales items are available that tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Flight Training
Guy York has been working on the simulator to add manual trim for those of us that are not accustommed to electronic trim. If you haven't seen this simulator yet, check with Guy or Jamie for a test flight. It is an impressive setup that allows you to fly all types of aircraft in all types of terrain and weather conditions. It will even give you a printout afterward so you can see how well you held course and altitude. Simulators are a great way to get in some practice without a major dent in the pocketbook. If you are working toward a certificate, some simulator time can be counted. Check with Guy for details.
