November 2008

EAA 890 was called to order by Vice-President Guy York. There were 19 present. The Secretary’s Minutes were approved as posted and the Treasurer's Report was approved as read.

Old Business
The Christmas get-together will be Dec. 13 at 7:00 at Western Sizzlin in Fort Payne. This will be in lieu of the morning meeting. The buffet will be $9.00 or you may order off the menu. If you would like to participate in Dirty Santa, bring a gift (limit $20.00) for each person participating.

The next Fly-In Breakfast will be Nov. 29 at 6:00 to 10:30. Please let Laura & John Bundy know what shift you can help with or if you can help with planes.

John Shippey will get applications for Space Academy & Aviation Challenge. If you know of a child who is truly interested in aviation, contact John for the application. Our chapter feels we possibly can sponsor two.
A committee will be formed to interview them.

Joyce Myers thanked everyone for helping at their Fly-In.

New Business
Election committee was appointed, Mike, Buster & John Myers will be calling people for offices.

Laura reported that the possibility of User Fees has been temporarily stalled. Aviation fees (i.e., fuel taxes) will continue as in the past, for now.

Harley reported The New Airport in Centre won’t be ready for another month. They are in process of moving so use the old airport until then. Also, the Paulding County airport in Georgia is the first new airport in 35 years. The opening is Nov. 14th. It is East of Centre.

Harley has a new RV7, John Myers has 65 hrs on his new RV8. They are both beautiful….they flew them in for the meeting.

Ron Iconis has the following for sale or to just get rid of. Prop Locks; 3 aircraft carburetors; 2 aircoup rudders; 1 bendix mag for 4-cylinder.

Bud Clark says the Palatka, Florida Airport has a great breakfast the 4th Saturday of each month.

Meeting adjourned: W. Playford, Sec.

Other News:

Lockhead Martin to close 5 more flight service stations
Lockhead Martin announced in October that it will close 5 more flight service stations including Macon, Georgia. Announcement of the closings comes just one year after congressional hearings critical of the FAA's oversight of Lockhead Martin were held. After February 1, 2009 calls will be routed to one of just three hubs; Ashburn, Virginia.; Fort Worth, Texas; and Prescott, Arizona.

To report a problem or complaint, call 888/358-7782 (888/FLT-SRVC). The complaint hotline is monitored by both FAA and Lockheed Martin. For more information on the closings, go to: http://www.aopa.org/advocacy/articles/2008/081015fss.html?WT.mc_id=&wtmcid;&WT.mc_sect=tts

From Our Members

Life images now online
Nelson Jackson has shared a link to a new online photo gallery that will feature millions of images from Life magazine's archives that have never been seen by the public before. The new service debuted this month with about 2 million photos. http://images.google.com/hosted/life

Eventually, Google plans to scan all 10 million photos from Life's library so they can be viewed on any computer with an Internet connection. About 97 percent of Life's archives have not been publicly seen, according to Life. Do a search for Aviation to see some very interesting photos.

See a Delta 777 built and take off in 4 minutes 10 seconds
Also from Nelson Jackson, "this is a fast time elapsed sequence video of a Boeing 777 being assembled. Very interesting. You may want to see it more than once to appreciate what is done. It is amazing." Click on the following: http://www.nmedia.com/777-200LR_Boeing.wmv

Cool photos
And if you have a few extra minutes, here are three more links from Nelson Jackson of some very cool military aircraft photos.
