January 2009

About 2 dozen people attended the January EAA 890 monthly meeting on a blustery day. The meeting was conducted by Mike Atwell, Wilma read last month's minutes, and Dr. John gave the treasurer's report.

Reminder: annual dues for the chapter are due ($10).

The cancellation of Young Eagles flights due to gusty winds led to a discussion during the monthly meeting about weather delays. Rather than make potential Young Eagles wait 3 months for the next scheduled flights, those children that came out but were unable to fly will be offered an opportunity to fly the following weekend. This will not be advertised in the newspaper.

Space camp was discussed. Next month Rodney Graham's son, Roger, will give the group some details about Space Camp and the target audience. Roger works for the Huntsville Space Museum. For more information about the Space Camp programs, visit www.spacecamp.com

Annual Fly-in
A fly-in discussion was held. Rome will have a fly-in on the second Saturday of May. We should have a hamburger fly-in. It was suggested that May's 5th Saturday breakfast be followed by a lunch. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. Madonna & Barry Wigley, Mike Stout, and Wilma Playford agreed to help plan the menus with John & Laura.

Harley spoke briefly about the Rome EAA meeting. Adam Grizzle, CEO of Aerospace Fabrications of Georgia can cut metal sheets to any size very inexpensively. Visit www.afog.com for more information.

Our next fifth Saturday breakfast will be January 31st. If you would be willing to help and haven't signed up yet, please email Laura.

Miscellaneous
Ron Iconis has been collecting quite a few aviation items from an estate in Georgia. Check with Ron for more information about what he has available.

FAA Funding Extension
On September 30, the very day that FAA funding was set to expire, President Bush signed the “Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2008,” which means the FAA has the money to continue operating until March 31, 2009.

“We’ve won the battle against user fees for now,” said AOPA President Phil Boyer. “This extension means that aviation fuel taxes remain at their current levels, and the FAA can’t charge any new fees for the length of this act.”

But that also means that the FAA funding issue starts anew when the new Congress convenes next year. Both the House and Senate will have to start drafting new legislation to determine how the FAA will be funded and what its budget will be. (from www.aopa.org)
