August 2009 Chapter Meeting

The EAA 890 August 8th meeting was called to order by President Mike Atwell. There were 10 members present.  Last month's minutes and treasurer's reports were read and accepted.

The city did not charge our chapter for the water leak we had in the line. They do not read our meter.

The airplane simulator from Wills Valley school has been brought back for additional attention. When we are able to complete repairs, it will be returned to them.

We need volunteers to help organizing an airshow/fly-in for the Fort Payne Airport next fall. Nelson Jackson, Mike Stout, Mark Vaughn and Mike Atwell offered to help on a committee to get things rolling.

The Fly-In Breakfast is Saturday, August 29th. Please let the Bundy's know which shift you can help on.

Rodney has located a job. Charles Jones is assembling his Neiuport in the EAA hangar.  Meeting was adjourned. Minutes taken by Mike Atwell.

At what age should a pilot stop flying?

The fatal crash this week involving 75-year-old Canadian power broker Jack Lawrence, who crashed his Cessna 206 in Ontario, has raised the issue of how old is too old to fly alone. Commercial airline pilots are required to retire as young as 55, but there is no upper age limit for acquiring or renewing a pilot license in Canada, as long as pilots log the hours and pass the medical exams, and some argue that the system should be no different than driving a car, and there should be no restrictions other than medical.  See the full article at The Globe and Mail (8/5/09).

Grass for Gas

For more than five years, Swift Enterprises, a small start-up firm founded by Purdue University professor John Rusek and largely staffed by grads, has been designing and producing its own form of renewable fuel meant as an unleaded replacement for 100LL. Independent laboratories including the FAA's fuel and engine center have tested Swift fuel and determined it performs as well as--and, in some areas, better than--100LL, in a variety of piston aircraft engines. Heroes' Story

The most requested video from AirVenture 2009 is David Hartman's interview of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles from Theater in the Woods. Here it is in edited form - it runs more than 45 minutes so if you lack a broadband connection, please allow the file to load. The pilots provide their gripping, sometimes humorous account of ditching US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, saving 155 lives. Watch and enjoy!

More on User Fees:

FAA reauthorization measure introduced in Senate

Senator Rockefeller and the commerce committee have introduced funding legislation into the Senate that would continue to fund the FAA for the next 2 years with the current funding mechanisms  (fuel taxes and ticket fees).  The legislation also advances modernization of the air traffic control system.  While both goals are a step in the right direction, we hope that a stable funding base for full modernization be extended beyond the next 2 years.  The possibility of user-fees is still lurking in the other funding proposals. One need only cross our northern border to understand how user fees can adversely affect general aviation.
