WAM: New Technology Hits GA

A new surveillance system introduced in Colorado allows air traffic controllers to track aircraft in areas not covered by radar. The new system, called Wide-Area Multilateration (WAM), requires no new equipment for aircraft and uses a network of relatively small sensors on the ground to pinpoint the location of aircraft in remote, mountainous regions. The sensors send out signals that are received and sent back by aircraft transponders. Sticking up for GA

Just a week after 'USA Today' ran a one-sided article generating negative sentiment against general aviation and perpetuating public misconceptions about GA, the newspaper is adding fuel to the fire. This time, it is an editorial. But, this time, 'USA Today' has given AOPA the opportunity to rebut. AOPA President Craig Fuller sets the record straight with the facts. Read Fuller's opinion piece in its entirety >> ( http://www.aopa.org/advocacy/articles/2009/ 090924fuller.html?WT.mc_id=090925epilot&WT.mc_sect=tts )

You don't need to be president of a national organization to get your voice heard.  When you hear a biased or one-sided story, SAY SOMETHING!  Other pilots did and NPR ran a corrected story.

Industry calls for long-term FAA funding

Another deadline passed this week for a long-term FAA budget, and aviation industry groups have united to urge Congress to focus on the issue. With 10 million jobs and $1 trillion at stake, 32 trade groups are insisting that the Senate pass a comprehensive reauthorization bill rather than another stopgap measure. The FAA's current budget was slated to expire Sept. 30, though lawmakers have extended the authorization through Dec. 31 while they search for a long-term solution. AVweb (9/30)
