October 2009 Chapter Meeting

The EAA 890 October meeting was held October 12, 2009. To see the full minutes, click here.

The airplane simulator has been repaired. Wilma will contact Wills Valley School to ascertain their needs. Otherwise it was suggested that we keep the simulator at the EAA hangar for Young Eagles days and maybe develop a traveling program that can be taken to other area schools.

The Fly-In Breakfast is Saturday, October 31st. Please let the Bundys know which shift you can help on.

Myers Fly-in
October 3rd was a perfect day for a fly-in at the Flying M Ranch near Blanche, Alabama. Thanks to John and Joyce for making the day a success and to Wayne Goza for his famous fish lunch. Check back for photos.

Christmas Party
The EAA 890 Christmas party will be Friday, December 11, 2009 at John & Joyce Myers new hangar. Check back for details.

GA needs you to step up, fight battle for small airports

Too many general avaition members are sitting back while the heads of their organizations battle the firestorm that started with the USA TODAY article blasting the government for allowing Aviation Trust Fund dollars to be squandered on small airports, according to this editorial. Members need to get motivated and act the way the Flyer's Rights crowd, run by Kate Hanni, did, and start petitions and take other action to fight for the survival of the small airports. NPR listeners defend general aviation airports

Listeners responded to National Public Radio in defense of general aviation airports after an interview with USA TODAY reporter Thomas Frank. John Welin of Ballston Spa, N.Y., said general aviation airports are public airports open to use by anyone with a pilot's license. Laura Bundy of Fort Payne, Ala., also said general aviation airports are one reason the U.S. has the most skilled pilots in the world. National Public Radio (text and audio) (9/18) ebrief. More on User Fees:

FAA user fees STILL possible for 2011

The two top members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Aviation Subcommittee are urging President Barack Obama to drop aviation user fees from his 2011 budget proposal. The president's 2010 budget hinted at a move toward user fees in 2011, and the issue has become central to the current debate over reauthorizing the FAA. Reps. Jerry Costello, D-Ill., and Tom Petri, R-Wis., are backing an extension of the current system, which maintains the air travel system through taxes on fuel and tickets, rather than user fees. To see a copy of their letter.

NOTE I: I spoke to Congressman Aderholt's office about supporting the Costello/Petri letter on October 8. The staffer I spoke to was not familiar with aviation funding and user fees. Take a minute to call your congressman and be prepared to educate the person you speak with. (LB)

NOTE II: Congressman Aderholt did sign on to the October 20th letter, along with 117 other members of congress, opposing user fees.
