Pilots strongly urged not to fly Zodiac CH601XL, CH650
In the wake of a Nov. 6 accident involving a Zodiac CH601XL, the FAA issued a special airworthiness information bulletin recommending that before further flight the aircraft be brought into compliance with a safety directive/safety alert from Aircraft Manufacturing & Design, which manufactures the airplanes. Congress calls for study of GPS backup
As VORs are being decommissioned and with loran-C on the chopping block, pilots are relying more on satellite-based technology for navigation -- but what will happen if there is a GPS outage? The House of Representatives is calling for the Coast Guard and Department of Transportation to study whether there is a continued need for a backup navigation system to GPS. Read more.
Aviation industry searches for alternative to 100LL
General aviation should prepare for the phasing out of 100LL fuel, which will happen by 2016 or 2017. The aviation industry is searching for an alternative to 100LL, which contains the neurotoxin tetra-ethyl lead. The front runner for fuel replacement is UL94, which would require modifications for some engines, but 100SF is also a possibility. General Aviation News (11/29)
Opinion: User fees could clip wings of general aviation airports
General aviation airports provide communities with benefits ranging from jobs for flight instructors to business for nearby restaurants and car rental services, yet many privately owned airports have been struggling, and user fees proposed by lawmakers are the last thing general aviation pilots need, according to this op-ed piece. The group Alliance for Aviation Across America has launched a website featuring a state-by-state database of general aviation statistics. Young Eagles - January 9, 2010 Young Eagles flights will be offered on the second Saturday of January, April, July and Octoberfrom 9 am to Noon. Bring your young aviation enthusiast
to the airport for a free introduction to the world of flying. Young Eagles
that complete the orientation will receive a free flight in a general
aviation plane and a certificate of completion.
