January 2010 Chapter Meeting

The EAA 890 monthly meeting was held January 9, 2010. About a dozen members braved the icy roads and cold temperatures to attend. The current chapter officers were recruited for another year in office.

Young Eagles flights were delayed a week due to the weather. We'll try again next Saturday, January 16.

Donations
The chapter has recently made donations in memory of Pat Shippey and Jerry Playford.

The chapter has received the Fort Payne share of the auction funds from the Christmas party with the Rome chapter. Guy York was able to coordinate with the a local group for distribution of items donated to Toys for Tots. Thanks to all those that contributed and to Guy for his efforts.

Fall Fort Payne Fly-in
A lengthy discussion was held about a possible fall fly-in. The fly-in committee (Mike Atwell, Mark Vaughn, Mike Stout, Ron Iconis and Bob Brown) met with the folks at Albertville to get their insight into hosting an event. Our goal is to keep the event free to the public. We will contact the National Guard about bringing aircraft for display, and explore options such as bringing a B-25 from Auburn over if we reimburse for fuel, etc. We will also look into the requirements for airshow permits, but will likely only do fly-bys this year rather than aerobatics. We would also like to provide a pilot hospitality spot. Tentative date will be October 16th.

Huntsville Space & Rocket Center
We already have one applicant for Space Camp. Rodney Graham will explore the possibility of arranging a private tour of the Space & Rocket Center for chapter members.

Other News
Scott Bixler still has a HP-11 sailplane for sale. See the flyer.

From our Members:

Thanks From Guy York
I just wanted to take a minute to thank all those who donated toys at our chapter Christmas party this year. I hated that I could not make the event and I wanted to thank Rodney and Becky Graham and Peggy Cowart for making sure the toys got back to the Fort Payne airport. I delivered the toys to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Dept on Saturday for their Christmas for Kids campaign. They were very appreciative of your kindness and your gifts went to a very good cause. There are many families who are struggling this holiday season and your gifts will make a child’s Christmas a bit brighter.

May you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thanks Again! ~Guy York

Vehicle speed 185 km/hour, range is 724 km on highways. Vehicle is fueled with gasoline, and the price of the car is expected to be around $200,000. The first shipment will be in 2011 http://www.terrafugia.com/Montage.html

In the News

Charter industry mobilizes for Haiti relief flights:
Jet charter firms and other members of the general aviation community are racing to join recovery efforts in Haiti. Medical shuttles are flying between Haiti and South Florida, carrying doctors on the way south, then returning with patients seeking hospital care. "The planes go down there, drop off the doctors and the supplies, and bring back the patients," says a spokesman for the University of Miami medical school. Literacy volunteer Christa Brelsford, whose leg was crushed when her home collapsed, was one of the first to be airlifted out in an 11-seat aircraft. "I'm just so thankful to be alive," she said Thursday from her hospital bed. The Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.)

New NTSB Requirements for Reporting Accidents, Incidents
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)'s final rule document published in the Federal Register modifies when a pilot must report an accident or incident to the NTSB in accordance with 49 CFR Part 830. This change, effective March 8, 2010, specifies the sort of accidents and incidents that must be reported immediately so it's important that you become familiar with these requirements before flying on that date. Still Holding a Paper Certificate? Deadline Looms for Replacement
It you are one of the pilots who has not yet traded in your old paper certificate for an updated, tamperproof version, you have until March 31 to make the change. After that date, you will be ineligible to exercise your privileges with a paper certificate. When you do make the change, you can also replace your social security number with a new pilot certificate number — recommended for personal identity security. The fee for making the swap is $2, and you can order your new certificate on line. To replace your airmen certificate click here. According to the site, it takes about two weeks for the FAA to process and mail the new certificate, so don't wait until the last minute.

House & Senate pass yet another FAA extension
Both the House and the Senate have passed a bill to continue funding the Federal Aviation Administration through March 2010.  HR 4217 extends aviation taxes as well as allows the FAA to spend those tax revenues on its programs.

The FAA has been operating under a series of extensions since its authorization expired in 2007. The House has passed a re-authorization bill in May, but the Senate has not taken it up due to a full calendar.
